In 1885 the railroad that linked San Diego to the East coast was completed. This launched a massive advertising and marketing campaign to draw in visitors to the San Diego area. At first, there were just a few visitors but immigrants started to come in droves. Out of necessity, many small towns started to pop up, one of which was Pacific Beach.
By the middle of 1886, thousands of people were arriving each month. Land speculators came to Pacific Beach looking to make a fortune in real estate. Advertisements boasted Pacific Beach as having all-but-vacant-land along magnificent beaches ideal for yachting, fishing and duck shooting. On December 12, 1887 the San Diego Union Tribune read news of the “most successful in the history of San Diego real estate transactions.”
Pacific Beach, affectionately referred to as the “Jewel Box” spawned streets named after many popular jewels such as Diamond, Turquoise, Sapphire, Opal, Emerald, and Garnet. The Garnet shopping district features hundreds of original boutiques as well as many well known brand name shops. The historic Crystal Pier has holds a bit of nostalgic Southern California on its wooden frame. One end of the pier is a fascinating hotel that allows you to sleep over the sea, while the other end is a bustling business and residential area.
Pacific Beach is perhaps most well known for it’s beautiful golden sand beaches and Ocean front boardwalk. Quaint hotels and resorts line the boardwalks along with beachfront dining and small green parks. On any given sunny San Diego day, you will see dolphins surfing in the waves, horseshoe games, surf competitions and people having a great time enjoying the beautiful beach. Real Estate in Pacific Beach is in high demand along the oceanfront and bay. The renovation underway is changing the face of real estate in the Mission Beach as well as Pacific Beach.
